Columbus Day a few friends gathered to explore the new Trustees of Reservations trailhead to Royalston Falls Reservation. The trailhead is off route 32 in Royalston near the Richmond New Hampshire border at the historic Newton Cemetery. The well marked trail passes through stands of giant Oaks winding down to the Falls Brook Valley. Crossing the brook on a series of stones the trail to the main falls bears right. The traveler is treated to a series of rock formations and small cascading falls before reaching the main event a quarter mile down the valley. Even with the relatively dry summer recent rains provided enough water to make the scenery beautiful.

Potholes and stone bridges possibly created by a mighty flow of glacially created silted water forced to funnel through the steep canyon walls (Thanks Dick for this possible explanation) adorn the Falls Brook Valley. If you travel upstream past the tail to Route 32 and continue on the Metacomet Monadnock trail the above more kames and pools can be found.
All in all,  A great way to spend a glorious fall day.
A special thanks to the EOEA Secretary Bob Durand's Tully Forest Iniative who with the help of the Mount Grace Land Conservation Trust, The Trustees of Reservations, Mass Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, and the Mass Department of Environmental Management, have protected over 9,000 acres of forestland in Athol, Orange, Warwick, and Royalston in just the last TWO YEARS!
