Second Day of
Quabbin Deer Hunt Cancelled The second day of the 2-day Petersham/Hardwick deer hunt at Quabbin Reservation had to be cancelled last Friday December 12th due to extreme weather conditions. Several inches of rain left Quabbin roads impassable, and icy conditions on trees made hunting conditions extremely hazardous. In addition, roads across Central Massachusetts were blocked by fallen trees, power lines, and downed limbs. Given these conditions, and the state of emergency declared by the Governor, the Department of Conservation and Recreation made the decision early Friday morning to cancel the hunt. Unfortunately, the missed second day of hunting at Quabbin will not be rescheduled this year. The Quabbin hunts are only held during the 2-week statewide shotgun season, which ended on December 13th. In addition, several days of preparation are needed to run the annual hunt, and the costs and time associated with setting up an additional 1-day of hunting would be prohibitive. Hunters who purchased a Quabbin specific antlerless permit from MassWildlife will not be issued a refund. Hunters did have the opportunity to use the permit during the first day of the hunt on Thursday December 11th, and although hunting was not allowed on Friday, it was due to a natural event, which is beyond MassWildlife’s control. Hunters who left equipment (tree stands, etc.) in the field on Thursday in anticipation of Friday’s hunt may call the Quabbin Visitor’s Center (413) 323-7221 to schedule a time to coordinate retrieving their equipment. We appreciate the understanding of all hunters who participated in the Quabbin hunt. As most sportsmen can attest, the weather is unpredictable and outside our control. The conditions and events on Friday, December 12th were unprecedented. A Quabbin hunt has never been cancelled because of the weather; however the safety of the hunters and DCR personnel necessitated the decision. |
